Karen Lowe serves as Chief Energy Officer at Human Energy since July 2023, focusing on enhancing business effectiveness. In addition, Karen holds the position of Head of Global Partnerships at 4 Day Week Global, having previously directed the successful launch of South Africa’s first National 4 Day Week Pilot Programme. With a longstanding career in marketing and education, Karen has also led 4 Day Week SA and has held roles as Managing Director at go4word and Senior Lecturer at both AAA School of Advertising and Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography. Karen's professional journey includes roles in various marketing and research capacities, notably at Unsgaard Packaging, AAPT, Millward Brown UK Limited, and Ogilvy & Mather. Educational qualifications include a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Psychology from the University of South Africa and an Honours degree in Strategic Marketing from the AAA School of Advertising.

he time has come for a new way of thinking about the future of work and how we adapt ourselves and our businesses. We believe the conversation for work needs to shift from time to productivity outcomes. By measuring the right indicators we can provide efficient work and allow for more time away from work. We proved this at one of our companies, Perpetual Guardian, where after a successful trial, we rolled out the 4 Day Week as a permanent way of working. The rise of the gig economy represents a new industrial era, and we have not had a conversation about its implications for our economy and society. With the work we are doing in our company and now this white paper, we seek to generate useful data and insights to share with organisations that wish to develop their own productivity and flexibility policies.
