Carlos Varela

Carlos E. Varela is a real estate developer from Brownsville, Texas. Mr. Varela is a partner in Varco Investments, a real estate company with holdings in Texas, Arizona, and Mexico. He is also a partner in Origo Works, a design-build architecture firm. Previously, Mr. Varela was a partner in Pronto Insurance, an insurance managing general agency with over 200 retail locations in Texas, California, and Florida. Pronto focused on providing insurance and financial services to the Hispanic market. In 2018, Pronto Insurance was acquired by Arthur J. Gallagher & Co., a global insurance broker. Mr. Varela was also a partner of TransMex, an international freight company which became the premier full truckload carrier in Mexico before it was acquired by Swift Transportation in 2004. Mr. Varela has been a director of Texas Regional Bank since 2010 and currently chairs the Information Technology Committee.

The idea for Texas Regional Bank emerged in 2008 when four businessmen recognized the community banking void in their local region caused by the consolidation of privately-held community and regional banks. Over the years, locally-owned banks had decreased, reducing the banking choices in many parts of Texas.
