Kennita R. Carter

Dr. Kennita R. Carter is a senior advisor in the Division of Medicine and Dentistry, Bureau of Health Workforce, at the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA). She is the Designated Federal Officer for the Council on Graduate Medical Education and the Advisory Committee on Training in Primary Care Medicine and Dentistry. These advisory committees provide advice and recommendations to the Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services and Congress on GME and the physician workforce. In addition, she serves as the HRSA representative on the US Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) National Academic Affiliations Advisory Committee. Prior to joining HRSA, she served as the inaugural acting director of the Integrative Health Coordinating Center in the VA Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation, Veterans Health Administration. Also at the VA, Dr. Carter served as co-chair of the Veterans Health Administration’s National Cultural Competence Committee. Dr. Carter started her career in academic medicine at the University of Maryland, where she continues to hold an academic appointment in the School of Medicine. Dr. Carter received her Bachelor of Science degree in psychobiology from the University of California Los Angeles. She completed medical school and an internal medicine residency at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, and a fellowship in geriatric medicine at Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Dr. Carter is a board-certified internist and fellowship-trained geriatrician, and she remains active in the education and training of fellows in geriatrics as a volunteer physician at the Baltimore VA Medical Center.
