Welcome to AIEconLab (Artificial Intelligence and Economics Laboratory).

AIEconLab is a research organization founded in the summer of 2023 by three PhDs in Economics from the University of Southern California.

The launch of ChatGPT in late November 2022 sparked a global wave of interest in artificial intelligence. Although it was not a newly invented technology, the remarkable capabilities demonstrated by ChatGPT as a generative AI model have fueled both excitement and concern that Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) — a form of intelligence that may surpass human cognition — and the so-called "Singularity" may be approaching sooner than expected. Leading AI experts such as Geoffrey Hinton have already issued warnings about the profound risks that unchecked AI development could pose to the future of humanity.

Around the world, intense discussions are taking place regarding the economic and societal implications of rapid AI advancements. Capital investment and startup activity have concentrated in generative AI sectors like ChatGPT, while large corporations such as IBM have announced large-scale workforce reductions due to AI-driven automation. In response, governments across the globe — including the U.S., EU, and China — are scrambling to develop both supportive measures and regulatory frameworks.

At AIEconLab, we believe that a deep understanding of both the technical advancements in AI and their broader implications is key to shaping the future of Korean society. Guided by this belief, our researchers are committed to closely tracking the latest developments in AI technology, conducting research from both academic and practical perspectives, and sharing those insights here.
