Gerard Smyth leads the company’s global technology team and is responsible for developing, maintaining and continuously strengthening core components of our technology platform, including infrastructure, cybersecurity and end-user capabilities. He and his team work closely with each part of the business to meet their evolving needs and find ways technology can help increase efficiency and create growth opportunities.
Smyth is particularly focused on advancing the client, advisor and employee experience through ongoing digital transformation. He and his team are moving processes and operations online, expanding the use of automation and data and analytics, and enhancing systems to best support clients and investors across all channels and geographies. Placing great value on the voice of the customer, he regards user feedback and data-driven insights as keys to meeting ever-changing technology expectations.
Smyth has been with the company since 2002, managing Advice & Wealth Management & Digital Technology for 18 years before his selection as CIO. Before leading advisor and digital technologies, he held senior delivery and architectural roles with American Express, the former parent company of Ameriprise Financial, in the U.S., UK and Australia. Prior to joining American Express, he was a trading system architect and later Chief Architect for the Australian Stock Exchange and system architect for crewing systems at Qantas Airways in Sydney, Australia.
Smyth holds a bachelor’s degree in Electronics Engineering from Imperial College, London, and an MBA from the University of Sydney, Australia. He is a passionate supporter of the Genesys Works program, which provides technology internship opportunities for disadvantaged students. It’s also a personal goal of his to grow and promote efforts supporting women in technology.
