From 2016 to 2017, they were an Engineering Intern at NEMO Equipment, Inc., where they contributed to weight testing in control and humidified environments to analyze destructive failures cause. Helaina also collected samples and participated in water column testing and quality analysis on future products. Additionally, they designed and built an optical permeability to test for delamination of TPU coatings in a long term wear situation. From 2016 to 2018, they were an Engineer Intern and Associate Engineer at Novinium, Inc., where they tested and designed engineering solutions for medium voltage underground power rejuvenation, with a focus in testing durability and life expectancy of products in extreme conditions. From 2017 to 2020, they were an Engineering Intern at the VA Hospital, where they coordinated optimization and repairs with contractors and unions, analyzed quality data on new products compared to the replacement or design of old ones, and compiled and evaluated data across all VA properties in New York State to better prioritize funding distribution and veteran support. From 2016 to 2021, they were a Freelance Engineer at Upwork, where they self-motivatedly worked online primarily in engineering optimization tasks and technical writing. Helaina also streamlined the design and user interface of OpenBRIM and 3D modeling program, as well as conducted materials selection and quality analysis for biocompatible silicon based hand implants to help encourage muscle recovery post operatively. From 2020 to 2021, they were a Test Engineer at Outdoor Research, where they designed and built a laboratory for cross-functional testing between PPE, Tactical, and Commercial divisions. Helaina also wrote testing protocol to standardize all R&D and QC testing for PPE Division. Currently, they are a Test Engineering Manager at Andrews Cooper.
Helaina Hurwitz graduated from Mission College Preparatory Catholic High School in 2014 with a Diploma. Helaina then attended NOLS, where they earned a Waddington Mountaineering, Rock and River degree in Leadership in 2014. In the same year, Hurwitz began attending Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, where they graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Materials Science Engineering in 2018. In addition, Hurwitz obtained certifications in Python for Data Science, Data Science Methodology, Open Source Tools for Data Science, What is Data Science?, and CPR and Wilderness First Responder from Coursera and Wilderness Medical Associates International, respectively, from 2017 to 2019.
