AssetCool has developed a technology which increases the performance of electricity networks while reducing energy losses, cost and emissions all at the same time. Bringing together recent advances in nanotechnology and coating formulation we have developed a novel photonic coating to solve the problem of conductor thermal rating by passively cooling overhead power lines. The solution works in two ways. The technology simultaneously reflects over 90% of solar radiation whilst increasing the amount of heat that escapes from overhead power lines. The main benefits include: Up to 45% increase current carrying capacity compared to conventional conductors Reduction in power losses and CO2 emissions by up to 30%; the coating on a conductor rated for the same ampacity can reduce power losses due to the conductor having lower resistance, in turn reducing the carbon footprint of the transmission asset. Reduction in corrosion; the outer coating is inherently corrosion resistant and can protect the outer conductor strands from degradation in harsh environments. Significant OPEX and CAPEX financial savings; increasing the overhead line static thermal rating reduces the need to install new assets to cope with increasing demand.
