Matthew Johnson

Matthew Johnson has extensive experience in economic analysis and data management, currently serving as Chief Economist and Chief Data Officer at the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade) since May 2020, where responsibilities include establishing machine learning and data science capabilities. Prior roles at IP Australia from September 2014 to May 2020 included Project Manager, A/g Director of the Office of the Chief Economist, and Data Advisor, where Matthew led teams on projects such as the IP Data Platform and delivered significant open data products. Earlier positions include Senior Policy Officer at the Department of Industry, Policy Officer at the Attorney-General's Department, and Graduate at the Department of Infrastructure & Transport. Matthew holds a Graduate Diploma in Economics and a Bachelor of Arts with Honours in Philosophy from the University of New England.
