Nathaniel Delos Santos

Bioinformatics Scientist at Avidity

Nathaniel Delos Santos has a diverse work experience spanning several roles and industries.

Starting in 2012, they worked as an Online Live 3D Data Visualization Programmer at Social Print Studio, where they collaborated with artistic designers and the company CEO to produce prototypes and final code. Nathaniel utilized HTML5, WebGL, and Javascript to create a 3D interface for presenting streaming JSON data in a real-time, interactive manner.

In 2014, Nathaniel joined SymbiOx, Inc. as a Lead Bioelectrical Engineer. Nathaniel led a team in developing a wearable light source for photosynthetic wound regeneration and designed bioelectrical equipment for animal testing. Additionally, they facilitated efficient communication by scheduling and coordinating team meetings to discuss design alternatives and iterations.

From 2014 to 2016, they worked as an SRA I (Bioinformatics) at UC San Diego Health System. Nathaniel executed an RNA-editing analysis pipeline, identifying genes and pathways affected by RNA editing activity for a collaboration with GlaxoSmithKline. Nathaniel also analyzed raw RNA-Seq data, applied experimental protocols, and performed troubleshooting on the San Diego Supercomputing Cluster.

In 2016, Nathaniel became a PHD Graduate Student at the University of California, San Diego. During this time, they focused on applying and developing novel Machine Learning methods to motif and regulatory module recognition tasks. Nathaniel also published a bioinformatics tool called MEIRLOP, which analyzed motif enrichment more efficiently than existing methods.

Currently, Nathaniel holds the position of Bioinformatics Scientist at Avidity Biosciences, Inc. starting in 2022. Further details about this role, including the specific responsibilities and achievements, are not provided.

Nathaniel Delos Santos pursued their education chronologically, starting in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Summa Cum Laude, in Bioengineering (Biotechnology) from UC San Diego. Nathaniel showed dedication and academic excellence during this period.

Motivated by their undergraduate studies and a passion for understanding the intricacies of biomedical informatics, Nathaniel embarked on further academic pursuits at UC San Diego in 2016. Over the course of six years, they completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Bioinformatics and Systems Biology, specializing in Biomedical Informatics.

Throughout their educational journey, Nathaniel demonstrated a strong commitment to expanding their knowledge and expertise in bioengineering and biomedical informatics. Their academic achievements reflect their dedication and aptitude in these fields.

Avidity Biosciences is pioneering a new class of precision medicines – antibody-siRNA conjugates (ASC™) – to deliver nucleic acid therapeutics against genetic drivers of disease. Our ASCs have drug-like properties similar to antibodies and antibody-drug conjugates. Importantly, their unique siRNA-based “payloads” permit selective targeting of disease-associated mRNAs against virtually any target of interest.
