Gerardus NG Wirken, born in 1948, studied business administration at the London Business School and qualified as a chartered accountant at the Netherlands Institute for Public Accounting (NIVRA). From 1966 to 1968 he worked as an assistant auditor at the Vereniging van Nederlandse Gemeenten. From 1968 to 1974 he worked in various companies as an accountant or chief accountant before heading up finance and accounting at Royal Boskalis Westminster NV from 1975 to 1986. At Ballast Nedam NV he was a member of the board and CFO from 1986 to 2002. Since 2003, Mr. Wirken has been a freelance consultant in the areas of strategy, controlling and accounting. From 2011 to 2022 he was also treasurer on the board of trustees of the Stichting Grote of Onze Lieve Vrouwe Kerk in Breda.
