Money Writer

Full-time · Lagos, Nigeria · Remote possible

Job description

Big Cabal Media (BCM) is an African digital media publication creating high-quality media brands and original content with global reach and impact.

Our publications, TechCabal and Zikoko, produce smart and sophisticated content in relatable and easily digestible ways and currently serve hundreds of thousands of readers on and off the continent. Since launch, our young but immensely talented team has told cutting-edge stories across culture, tech, money, relationship, and lifestyle that have changed and are changing the way Africans see themselves and the world sees Africa.

Zikoko creates and curates humorous and insightful content that draws heavily from Nigerian youth pop culture. From viral quizzes to insightful stories about the spending habits of Nigerians, the publication caters to a very diverse audience and has been the epicenter of many cultural conversations.

About the role In 2019, we put out the first episode of Naira Life, and it caught on like wildfire. A few months later, we started putting out stories about how Nigerians earn money, and that intrigued the audience too. We were talking about money, and people wanted to know more. How were people earning, spending, and losing their money? The Money category exists to answer all these questions. We are telling intriguing stories about how money moves through the lives of Nigerians and Africans. Beyond that, we’re also trying to help people understand all the things attached to money today: savings, investments, NFTs and such. We’re looking for a candidate that has experience creating content around money. You must be comfortable with social media and know what content can catch on. You should be able to write clear, concise sentences that pass across your message. We don’t expect you to know all of the financial jargon or to use them frequently. Excellent if you do. It would be good to know about financial systems and terms, but more importantly, you are a researcher who will read and digest whatever they need to for the story to work. We want to simplify the concept of money and we want you to do it with us. This role is full-time and remote-friendly. While we would love to get a cup of coffee with you in the chaotic city of Lagos, we don’t mind if you want to join us over Google Meet from Makurdi.

What you’ll do:

  • You will ideate, develop and publish diverse and original content about money and finance that positions Money as the go-to vertical for stories about money. These stories must be SEO-compliant, follow Zikoko’s Style Guide, have 99% grammar error-free using available tools (like Grammarly), and be insightful and fun.
  • You will work with a Senior Editor and the Growth team to create a calendar for Money across content formats.
  • You will stay on top of trends by prowling the internet and social media, and searching for money-related topics. Let’s talk about how money interacts with our lives in the present!
  • You will conduct storytelling experiments to find new ways to delight our audience.
  • You will work with other teams to create content in various formats for social media and our YouTube channel.
  • You will contribute to the Money by Zikoko and Zikoko Daily newsletters.
  • You will launch hilarious flagship series that keep readers coming up for more.
  • You will be obsessed with distribution and finding the communities that need the stories you write.
  • You’ll excel in this role if:
  • You are a talented writer who can, with rigor, turn a story into content.
  • You want to write engaging, helpful stories about money for young people navigating Nigeria and the world.
  • You are religious about creating and curating the most exciting things about money and how it’s made, spent, and lost.
  • You love experiments because you know they lead to innovative solutions.
  • You’re not afraid of difficult stories and will take charge of coming up with solutions for them.
  • You care about financial freedom for our readers.

Working at Big Cabal Media

  • You'll be joining a team of talented, hard-working, disciplined professionals passionate about telling stories that matter and solving complex problems for an African audience.
  • We're a digital company that’s currently working almost full-remote (there are occasional in-person strategy sessions and meet-ups, but we work well with colleagues who are not in Lagos or Nigeria). We use Slack, Google Docs, Notion, and Airtable to keep on top of things.
  • We typically try to arrange work between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. WAT, but we don’t have a stick up our butt about hours. We care about quality and results. Our people get things done fast and well, and we ask them to take care of themselves. Burnout isn’t fun or useful.
  • While collaborative work will be the norm and is the requirement, team members who want to work at BCM must also demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently.
  • Applicants for this role may come from a range of backgrounds. We’re an equal-opportunity employer.
  • We encourage candidates of all experience levels to apply. If the above doesn't describe you perfectly, please get in touch anyway and tell us why you want to work with us.
