Thomas Mitchell

Director, Enterprise Business Management at Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

Thomas Mitchell is the director of the Enterprise Business Management team with primary responsibility for the foundation’s centralized financial planning, forecasting, and data analysis functions.

Thomas joined the foundation in 2006, and prior to his current role, served as program chief financial officer for the U.S. Program division. Before joining the foundation, he spent eight years with GE Healthcare providing financial management support to medical information systems product lines. Other significant professional experience includes three years with the Nagasaki Prefectural Board of Education in Nagasaki, Japan, and three years as a management consultant in the banking industry.

He completed a B.A. in Economics from the University of Alabama-Birmingham and an M.S. in Finance from Seattle University. His personal philanthropic interests center around managing a small family foundation focused on environmental conservation efforts around Pacific Northwest rivers. When not at work or spending time with family, Thomas can often be found fly-fishing PNW rivers or surfing the Washington coast.
