René Alvarez has been working in academic advising and success for over 8 years. They have experience as a program manager, senior SGS academic advisor/instructor, and director of academic success and advising. René is currently a board member at Bill Wilson Center.
In 2018, René was the recipient of the Creative Employee of the Year Award at Oglethorpe University. This award was given in recognition of their work in executing an academic advisement strategy that supported the retention and graduation of students across several degree programs.
At Oglethorpe University, René also planned and executed the first-year student summer orientation program called Making a Petrel (MAP). In addition, they oversaw various programs such as the Office of Accessibility, Writing and Tutoring Center, and Excel Academic Coaching Program.
Prior to working at Oglethorpe University, René was a program manager at Central Texas College and a senior SGS academic advisor/instructor at the University of South Florida.
René Alvarez completed a Bachelor of Arts at Florida International University, a Master of Science at Florida International University, a Master of Education at Colorado State University, and a Doctor of Philosophy at the University of South Florida.

Bill Wilson Center is a nonprofit community-based organization serving over 6,000 clients in Santa Clara County annually. It is the mission of Bill Wilson Center to support and strengthen the community by serving youth and families through counseling, housing, education, and advocacy. With an emphasis on youth development, Bill Wilson Center programs focus on building self-confidence and developing personal assets. With these tools, youth can permanently change the direction of their lives.
