Jarrell Mitchell currently serves as a Deputy Attorney General in the Civil Rights Enforcement Section of the California Department of Justice since January 2024. Prior to this role, Mitchell was a Senior Attorney at Neighborhood Legal Services of Los Angeles County, focusing on Reentry and Clean Slate Initiatives from December 2017 to January 2024, and previously held the position of Staff Attorney within the same team. Mitchell's experience also includes serving as a Racial Justice Institute Fellow at the Shriver Center on Poverty Law in 2020, and working as a Litigation Associate and Summer Associate at Paul Hastings between 2013 and 2017. Early legal experience includes internships at the Neighborhood Defender Service of Harlem and South Brooklyn Legal Services, where representation focused on tenant rights and housing law, as well as a paralegal role at the New York County District Attorney's Office from 2009 to 2011. Mitchell earned a J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2014 and holds an A.B. in Government and African and African American Studies from Dartmouth College.
