Steven Kerns

Steven Kerns is a Deputy Attorney General for the California Department of Justice since October 2020, where responsibilities include representing client agencies in state courts and advising on environmental and energy policy. Additionally, Kerns serves as a Graduate Lecturer at California State University, Long Beach, teaching Sustainability 606 on Environmental Law, Policy, and Ethics. Past experience includes roles as a law clerk at the Natural Resources Defense Council, where Kerns authored research memos on various legal topics, and as a summer associate at Mabus Group, focusing on research for security and environmental firms. Kerns also held positions such as Emmett Fellow at the California Department of Justice, Civicspark Water Action Fellow at Inland Empire Utilities Agency, and a member of NASA's DEVELOP team. Educational qualifications include a Doctor of Law from Harvard Law School and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science and Policy from California State University, Long Beach.
