James began their career as an Intern at Ball Corporation in January 1989 before pursuing their graduate studies at Duke University from January 1989 to December 1997.

James M. Sloat earned their Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Political Science and Government from Duke University, and their B.A. in Politics from Washington and Lee University.
