Ben Hawes is an accomplished independent consultant specializing in policy and strategy on AI, smart cities, and emerging digital technologies, currently active since July 2018. In addition to this role, Ben serves as Associate Director at Connected Places Catapult, promoting the procurement of innovative services and network development. Previous positions include Engagement Director for the Benchmark Initiative at Geovation, where Ben co-authored the Locus Charter on the responsible use of location data, and Director of Cities at Digital Leaders. Ben's government experience includes leading public policy on Artificial Intelligence at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and spearheading the Smart Cities and IoT policy at the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. With a strong educational background, which includes a Ph.D. from the University of Bristol and postgraduate studies in copyright law, Ben has significantly contributed to the intersection of technology and policy throughout a diverse career.
