Matei Zaharia

Co-Founder & Chief Technologist at Databricks

Matei Zaharia is the Chief Technical Officer and co–founder of Databricks. Matei started the Spark project at UC Berkeley and serves as its Vice President at the Apache Foundation. He also serves as an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Stanford. Throughout his career, Matei has contributed to several other widely used open source projects, including Apache Mesos and Tachyon, which he co-started, Apache Hadoop, and key components of Spark such as MLlib, Spark Streaming and Spark SQL. He was awarded the ACM Doctoral Dissertation Award in 2014 for his research on large-scale computer systems, and Best Paper awards at NSDI and SIGCOMM. Matei holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from UC Berkeley and a B.Math from the University of Waterloo.
