Julian Risch has been working in the field of machine learning since 2011. In 2011, they worked as a Junior Software Consultant at PROMOS consult Projektmanagement, Organisation und Service GmbH. In 2012, they took on the role of Teaching Assistant at the Hasso Plattner Institute. In 2015, they worked as a Software Engineering Intern at SAP. In 2016, they became a Researcher / PhD Student at the Hasso Plattner Institute. In 2021, they joined deepset as a Senior Machine Learning Engineer, where they are responsible for the implementation of an open-source framework for neural search called Haystack and training, tuning, and distilling NLP models for document retrieval, question answering, and more.

Julian Risch obtained their Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in IT-Systems Engineering from the Hasso Plattner Institute between 2011 and 2014. Julian then went on to earn their Master of Science (M.Sc.) in IT-Systems Engineering from the same institute between 2014 and 2017. Finally, Risch achieved their PhD (Dr. rer. nat.) in Information Systems from the Hasso Plattner Institute between 2017 and 2020.
