Fernando Macário has a diverse and extensive work experience in the field of renal care and transplantation. Fernando began their career in 1992 at the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra (CHUC), where they served as a Medical Assistant Graduated until 2019. During this time, they also held the position of Assistant in Nephrology at the Faculty of Medicine at the Universidade de Coimbra from 1996 to 2019. In 2009, they became the President of the Portuguese Society of Transplantation, a role they held until 2016. Fernando then joined Diaverum Portugal, where they served as Iberia Medical Director and later became Chief Medical Officer until their latest recorded role in 2019. In addition to their clinical and leadership roles, they have also been involved in professional organizations such as the European Board of Transplantation Medicine, where they were a Jury Member from 2010 to 2020, and the Portuguese Society of Transplantation, where they currently hold an Honorary Member position since 2022.

Fernando Macário began their education journey in 1983 at the Universidade de Coimbra, where they pursued a degree in Medicine. Fernando successfully completed their undergraduate studies in 1989. After a few years, in 2016, they returned to the same university as a PhD student in the field of Health Sciences, specifically in the Curso de Doutoramento em Ciências da Saúde. Their doctoral studies spanned from 2016 to 2020. Most recently, in 2021-2022, Fernando attended Harvard Business School Executive Education, where they focused on Managing Health Care Delivery. In addition to their educational achievements, Fernando also obtained a certification in Managing Health Care Delivery from Harvard Business School.
