Maggie ONeill is a prominent academic in the fields of sociology and criminology, currently serving as a Professor in Sociology & Criminology at the Department of Sociology & Criminology at University College Cork since November 2018. ONeill holds esteemed positions as a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and a Fellow of the Academy of Social Sciences (AcSS) since May 2023 and June 2021, respectively. Previous roles include Chair in Sociology and Criminology at the University of York and Professor in Criminology at Durham University, where ONeill also served as Principal of Ustinov College. With an extensive background in academia spanning from Nottingham Trent University to Staffordshire University, ONeill possesses a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a Bachelor of Education (BEd), reflecting a commitment to education and research.

The Royal Irish Academy/Acadamh Ríoga na hEireann is an all-Ireland, independent, academic body that promotes study and excellence in the sciences, humanities and social sciences. We champion research identifying and recognising Ireland’s world class researchers. The Academy is run by a Council of its members. Membership is by election and considered the highest Academic honour in Ireland. There are over 580 members. We bring together academia, government and industry to address issues of mutual interest by providing an independent forum. We lead important national research projects, particularly in areas relating to Ireland and its heritage.
