Joanne Hayek is a Professor and Researcher at the Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation since February 2021, collaborating with prestigious institutions such as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and The New School’s Parsons School of Design. As a Co-Founder and Designer at VANINA since May 2007, Joanne leads a social enterprise focused on the intersection of fashion and sustainability. Additionally, Joanne serves as a Senior Lecturer at the American University of Beirut's Department of Architecture and Design, committed to promoting sustainable development within the community. In 2012, Joanne founded AN OPEN STUDIO to facilitate interdisciplinary research in sustainable design. Previous experience includes architectural roles at WORKac and Architecture Studio, complemented by an educational background in Architecture from Columbia University, the Architectural Association, and the American University of Beirut.

In collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and The New School’s Parsons School of Design, Dubai Institute of Design and Innovation (DIDI) is a private, non-profit university, located at Dubai Design District (d3), accredited by the Ministry of Education in the UAE. With its first intake in 2018, DIDI is focused on nurturing, mentoring and creating the next generation of designers. The curriculum is designed to empower students to map out their own four-year educational journey, culminating in the region’s first Integrated Bachelor of Design degree, with a choice of concentration in the areas of Product Design, Multimedia Design, Fashion Design and Strategic Design Management.
