Ewan Birney has held several positions in the field of bioinformatics. Ewan started their career as a graduate student at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in 1996. In 2000, they moved to the European Bioinformatics Institute (EBI) where they became the Head of Nucleotide Data. Ewan continued in this role when the EBI became a separate company in 2007. Additionally, they were also a Senior Scientist at EBI.
Ewan Birney completed their Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry from the University of Oxford, where they studied from 1992 to 1996.
