Iain Nicoll has a comprehensive background in the energy industry, with experience in market design, metering, and validation management. Iain currently serves as Wholesale Market Design Manager and Imbalance Settlement Group Chair at Elexon, as well as EMR Aggregation Rule Validation Manager. With previous roles at ScottishPower and ARW Transformers, Iain has a strong foundation in metering engineering and calibration. Nicoll holds both a Master of Science in Optical Electronics and a Bachelor of Engineering in Electronic and Electrical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde.

Elexon plays a key role in the electricity system by managing the Balancing and Settlement Code (BSC), one of 10 major codes which set out the rules so that Britain’s energy system operates effectively. Elexon compares contracts to buy and sell electricity in the wholesale market with actual volumes. We work out a price for the differences and transfer funds accordingly. We are trusted, independent, reliable market experts and we provide our services without making profits. As Britain’s energy sector continues to evolve we are working to ensure that our BSC systems can support the future needs of our customers and progress to Net Zero. This includes rolling out Elexon Kinnect, our cloud platform to deliver Settlement and all of our services, including provision of open data on the wholesale electricity market.
