The Financial Fraud Awareness Campaign was inspired during lockdown in 2020 by Jeremy Asher after witnessing vast numbers of young people debanked due to unwittingly being used as money mules. Most had no idea of what money laundering was and had received no fraud awareness education. Jeremy started writing about this issue and the devastating impacts that fraud markers can have on individuals and businesses when applied by banks and other financial organisations. Such markers lead to debanking, can wreck career opportunities and aspirations, cause unemployment and cause difficulty obtaining most lines of credit.

Jeremy and his wife, Maria, together designed a presentation that Jeremy delivered to the upper sixth of his daughter's old school, instigated by the then Head of Governors, Richard Swarbrick. Jeremy's subsequent posts on LinkedIn were picked up by Robert Brooker, then Chair of the National Fraud Forum, and from that "the school's project" was born, gathering a group of dedicated counter-fraud professionals and educators who all recognise that not enough is being done to educate about fraud risk. Those discussions led to petitioning of Government to make fraud awareness education compulsory on the national curriculum.

The schools project was formalised into a not-for-profit community interest company, FFAC C.I.C. in May 2024 by Jeremy and Richard. FFAC proposes targeted education and training on a scale far wider than considered by the previous Government's National Fraud Strategy which fails to address that all sectors of society and communities require dedicated consistent fraud awareness education. We are facing a national emergency - according to a 2023 report by Crowe, the University of Portsmouth and Peters & Peters, fraud costs the UK economy £219bn a year. FFAC aims to work with suitably qualified volunteers and other agencies to deliver a nationwide programme of in-person education and training, backed by online support and signposting.
