Lucia Estelles is a Senior Bioinformatician at Genomics England since July 2023, leading improvements in genomic testing processes for rare disease and cancer patients in a medically accredited laboratory. Previously, Lucia served as a Clinical Bioinformatician at Oxford Nanopore Technologies, focusing on workflow implementation in compliance with established medical device standards. Experience includes collaborative leadership in bioinformatics methodologies at the National Center for Genomic Analysis and contributions to clinical genomics as a Bioinformatics Scientist at Illumina. Additional roles have included bioinformatics research in virology at hVIVO and complex data analysis at Cranfield University, alongside participation in the iGEM synthetic biology competition. Lucia holds a Master’s degree in Bioinformatics from Cranfield University and a Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology from Universitat Politècnica de València.

Genomics England is a wholly owned company of the Department of Health set up to deliver the 100,000 Genomes Project. It was made possible by the National Institute for Health Research, NHS England, Public Health England, and Health Education England.Genomics England sequences 100,000 whole genomes from NHS patients and their families. Its fourmain aims include bringing benefit to patients, creating an ethical and transparent program based on consent, supporting new scientific discovery and medical insights, and kick-starting the development of the U.K. genomics industry.Genomics England is focusing on patients with rare diseases, and their families, as well as patients with common cancers. It was announced by Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health, as part of the NHS 65th birthday celebrations in 2013. It is based in London, England.
