Michael Torrens-Spence

Michael Torrens-Spence is an accomplished professional in the field of microbial engineering, currently serving as Associate Technical Director at Ginkgo Bioworks, Inc. since October 2020. Prior experience includes roles as Senior Organism Engineer and Program Lead, as well as Organism Engineer at the same company. Michael's academic background includes a PhD in Biochemistry from Virginia Tech, where studies were completed between 2010 and 2014, following a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry earned at the same institution from 2003 to 2007. Prior to Ginkgo Bioworks, Michael conducted research as a Postdoctoral Researcher at the Whitehead Institute from June 2014 to October 2020 and worked as a Research Associate at Intrexon Corporation from 2008 to 2010.
