Charles Hyde and David Vredenburg opened a small general store in 1930 in Beaconsfield, Iowa. Today' employee-owned Hy-Vee chain operates over 230 grocery stores and drugstores in Illinois, Iowa (home to approximately half of the company's stores), Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota.
