It was established by the Government of Quebec in 1944 from the expropriation of private firms. Hydro-Québec generates, transports and distributes electricity. It essentially exploits renewable energies, more particularly hydroelectricity. It also does research in energy-related fields and is actively interested in energy efficiency. In addition, it develops the technologies resulting from its research.
