Juan Carlos Benitez-Navarro is a Senior Specialist in the Management of Disused Sealed Sources and Nuclear Engineer at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since August 2010, where technical documents and training materials have been developed for Member States. Previously, as Head of the Radioactive Waste Management Section at the Center for Radiation Protection and Hygiene (CPHR) from 1996 to 2010, plans for a national processing facility for Disused Sealed Radioactive Sources (DSRS) and radioactive waste were designed and developed. In 2005, Juan Carlos served as Project Team Leader for a Phare Project at Empresarios Agrupados Internacional S.A., managing a team of experts to design waste processing and storage facilities. Earlier in their career, from 1988 to 1994, Juan Carlos was Head of the Chemical Separation Processes Unit at the Center for Studies Applied to Nuclear Development (CEADEN), where a pilot process for the extraction of various elements was successfully implemented. Juan Carlos holds a PhD in Nuclear Chemistry from Comenius University in Slovakia.
