Cynthia R. Powers

Cynthia Powers is a native of Gary, Indiana, and earned both a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in College Student Personnel from Indiana State University. She was appointed to the Indiana State University Board of Trustees as an alumni trustee in 2017. In 1970, immediately after graduating from college, Cynthia and her then fiancé Mamon Powers, Jr. started Powers Realty, Inc., while at the same time Cynthia was on the staff at Indiana University Northwest as a counselor, and Mamon joined his father as an engineer and project manager at Powers and Sons Construction Company. In later years, as Mamon began to devote his full time attention to Powers Construction, Cynthia took full control of the real estate business and soon after purchased a Century 21 franchise. Trustee Powers has served in leadership roles for numerous civic, charitable, educational and cultural organizations in Northwest Indiana. She previously served on the ISU Alumni Board and the President’s National Advisory Board. In addition to the ISU Board of Trustees, she currently serves on the Board of Advisors for Indiana University Northwest, the Lubeznik Center of Arts, and the Northwest Indiana Council of the United Negro College Fund for which she was a cofounder. In addition, she is a member of the Northern Indiana Chapter of the Links and a Golden Life Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Her efforts have received a number of accolades including being inducted into The Times of Northwest Indiana’s Business and Industry Hall of Fame and earning Indiana State’s Distinguished Alumni Award.
