Ian Thomson

Ian Thomson is a seasoned professional with extensive experience in policy and advocacy within the international development sector. Currently serving as a Senior Program Specialist at the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) since January 2025, Ian previously held the role of Manager of Policy and Advocacy at Oxfam Canada from February 2017 to January 2025, leading a team focused on gender justice and coordinating efforts in various policy areas, including women's economic equality and climate justice. Earlier roles include Policy Specialist for Extractive Industries at KAIROS: Canadian Ecumenical Justice Initiatives, Program Coordinator at Sustainalytics, and Campaigner at the Maquila Solidarity Network. Ian holds an M.A.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Toronto and a B.Sc.(Eng.) in Engineering Physics from Queen's University.
