William Choong

William Choong is a Senior Fellow at ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute since January 2020, specializing in Asia-Pacific security issues. Prior to this role, William served as the Shangri-La Dialogue Senior Fellow for Asia-Pacific Security at the International Institute for Strategic Studies from February 2013 to January 2020, where responsibilities included conducting research, acting as a para-diplomat, co-editing the IISS Asia-Pacific Regional Security Assessment, and leading the Southeast Asian Young Leaders’ Programme. William's earlier experience includes serving as a Senior Writer and Correspondent at The Straits Times from 1995 to 2013, focusing on defense and regional security topics. Academically, William holds a PhD in International Relations from The Australian National University, a Master's in International Relations and Asian Politics from The University of Queensland, and a Bachelor's in Business Administration from the National University of Singapore.

ISEAS - Yusof Ishak Institute (formerly Institute of Southeast Asian Studies) is dedicated to the study of socio-political, security, and economic trends and developments in Southeast Asia and its wider geostrategic and economic environment. The Institute aims to stimulate research and debate within scholarly circles, enhance public awareness of the region, and facilitate the search for viable solutions to the varied problems confronting the region. It also strives to nurture a community of scholars interested in the region and to engage in research on the multi-faceted dimensions and issues of stability and security, economic development, and political, social, and cultural change. The Institute conducts a range of research programmes; holds conferences, workshops, lectures, and seminars; publishes briefs, research journals, and books; and provides a range of research support facilities, including a large library collection.
