Joel Jones has a strong background in library services, starting as a Library Assistant at the Mesquite Public Library System in 1990. Joel then moved on to become a Reference Librarian at the Jefferson County Public Library-Arvada Branch in 1991. In 1994, Joel joined the Kansas City Public Library as the Deputy Director of Library Services, a role they currently hold.

Joel Jones earned their Bachelor of Business Administration degree in Business Administration and Management from The University of Kansas School of Business in 1988. Joel later pursued a Master of Library & Information Science degree in Library and Information Science from the University of North Texas, which they completed in 1991.
