The Massachusetts Legal Assistance Corporation (MLAC) was established by the Commonwealth in 1983 to ensure that low-income people with critical non-criminal legal problems would have access to legal information, advice, and representation. MLAC is the largest funding sources for civil legal aid programs in Massachusetts.

Unlike in criminal matters, there is no right to an attorney in civil cases in the United States. This frequently forces those who cannot afford a lawyer to face the complex legal system alone, with often devastating consequences on their health and wellbeing. By providing free legal advice and representation, civil legal aid protects the safety and stability of low-income individuals and families. It provides critical support in cases related to housing, employment, family law, domestic violence, health care, education, immigration, protection of elders, and more.
