Joel Boyd has extensive experience in educational leadership, with their most recent position being the Chief Executive Officer at Mastery Schools since July 2023. Prior to that, they served as the Superintendent of Schools at Lowell Public Schools from 2019 to 2023. Before joining Lowell Public Schools, Joel worked as an Academic Superintendent at Boston Public Schools from 2017 to 2019. Joel also held the position of Superintendent of Schools at Santa Fe Public Schools from 2012 to 2016. Additionally, Joel served as an Assistant Superintendent/Director/Principal at The School District of Philadelphia from 2008 to 2012 and as a Special Assistant to the Superintendent at Miami-Dade County Public Schools from 2007 to 2008.
Joel Boyd holds a Ed.D. degree in Urban Superintendents Program (2007-2012) from Harvard University. Prior to that, they obtained an Ed.M. degree in Education Policy and Management (2006-2007) from Harvard University. Joel also holds a M.Ed. degree in School Leadership (2002-2004) from Wilmington University and a B.S. degree in Education (1997-2001) from the University of Delaware.

Mastery Charter Schools and Mastery Schools of Camden form a non-profit school network of charter, turnaround and renaissance schools in Philadelphia, PA and Camden, NJ, serving over 14,000 students in grades K-12. Our mission is to ensure all students learn the academic and personal skills they need to be truly prepared for postsecondary success and able to pursue their dreams. Mastery is nationally recognized for its ability to turn around failing neighborhood schools and to drive dramatic student achievement gains. In our turnaround schools, test scores have increased, on average, more than 40 percentage points per grade and subject after three years, violence decreased by 80% and student turnover dropped by one-third.
