Eric Nelson has a diverse and extensive work experience spanning over three decades. Eric began their career in journalism as a reporting intern at The Stockton Record in 1991. Eric worked as a reporting/copy desk intern at the Omaha World-Herald in 1992 before becoming the editor of the school newspaper, The University Daily Kansan, at the University of Kansas. Afterward, they joined The Wichita Eagle as an editor on the copy desk and later became the editor in business.
Nelson then moved to The Dallas Morning News, where they held various roles such as assistant city editor, night city editor, and deputy metro editor. Eric played a crucial role in planning, editing, and managing the newsroom's operations. Eric also worked as the general assignments department head and assistant metro editor/general assignments editor/local news enterprise.
Following their time at The Dallas Morning News, Nelson worked at Politico, holding positions such as deputy technology editor and technology editor. Eric led a team covering technology policy in Washington, D.C. Subsequently, they became the managing editor of digital content at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, where they helped launch their digital platform featuring policy analysis and stories about the business community.
Nelson then returned to The Kansas City Star/McClatchy Newspapers, working as the central region audience growth editor. Eric focused on audience engagement and subscriber retention strategies. Eric later became the senior editor at Mahoning Matters, a digital-only news site, where they worked on editorial strategy, advertising, and fundraising.
Currently, Nelson is the senior director of platform optimization at McClatchy, where they lead a team in making data-driven decisions to improve the efficiency of McClatchy's news platforms. Eric collaborates with various departments, including newsrooms, product, and finance.
Throughout their career, Nelson showcased their expertise in digital and multimedia journalism, strategic planning, team management, and audience engagement.
