Jon Kaufman is the Chief of Strategic Initiatives, leading and supporting cross-MTA efforts to share best practices and improve performance across all operating agencies and within headquarters support functions.
Prior to joining the MTA in 2021, Kaufman was the Chief Operating Officer for the New York City Department of City Planning for seven years, driving more productive collaboration with internal and external partners, and developing more effective technology tools for its planners and the public. He also oversaw the agency’s growing capital planning division and all its administrative functions.
Prior to that, Kaufman was a partner at management consulting firm Bain and Company, where he specialized in operational improvement, organizational effectiveness, and customer loyalty.
Kaufman has degrees from Northwestern University and M.I.T., and lives in Brooklyn.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America's largest transportation network, serving a population of 15.3 million people in the 5,000-square-mile area fanning out from New York City through Long Island, southeastern New York State, and Connecticut. The MTA comprises six agencies: MTA New York City Transit, MTA Bus Company, MTA Long Island Rail Road, MTA Metro-North Railroad, MTA Bridges and Tunnels, and MTA Construction & Development.
