Don Barthelmess has a diverse work experience in the field of marine technology and diving. Don started their career in 1980 as a Life Support Technician at Taylor Diving & Salvage and later became the General Manager at International Underwater Contractors. In 1989, they joined Subsea Services as a Consultant, providing various services such as technical writing, diver training, project management, and dive medical training. Don also served as a Diving Course Director/Instructor Trainer at NAUI World Wide. In 1994, they became the Treasurer of the Association of Commercial Diving Educators Inc and the President of the Board of Directors/Director at the Historical Diving Society USA. Don worked at Santa Barbara City College as a Professor of Marine Technology, teaching courses in hyperbaric training, emergency dive medicine, physics/physiology, and commercial diver training. Don also served as the Director of Marine Technologies, overseeing the academic department and collaborating with industry employers. During their tenure, they held leadership positions at the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, serving as the Past President and Vice President of the Board of Directors. Additionally, they were a member of the Board of Directors at SOS California, working towards reducing environmental impact through education and awareness.

Don Barthelmess has a diverse education history. In 2004, they obtained an M.A. degree in Educational Technology from Pepperdine University. Prior to that, from 2001 to 2003, they pursued a B.S. degree in Occupational Studies at California State University, Long Beach. In 1980, they completed an A.S. degree in Underwater Technology from Florida Institute of Technology. Additionally, Don Barthelmess attended Santa Barbara City College, though information about the degree and field of study is not available.

Apart from their formal education, Don Barthelmess has acquired several certifications. In 2016, they obtained the certification of Mixed Gas Diving Supervisor from the Association of Diving Contractors (ADCI). In 2012, they received the certification of Un-Restricted Surface Supplied Diving Supervisor from the Diver Certification Board of Canada (DCBC). In 2007, they became certified as an Evolution Rebreather Diver by Technical Diving International (TDI). Furthermore, in 2005, they received the Diver Medic certification from the International Board of Undersea Medicine (IBUM) and the KMDSI Maintenance & Repair Technician certification from Kirby Morgan Dive Systems. In 1995, they became a certified Diver Medic Instructor by the National Board of Diving & Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT). Additionally, they hold certifications as an Instructor Trainer in Gas Mixing and Advanced Occupational Nitrox Diving from the International Association of Nitrox and Technical Divers, as a Course Director/Instructor Trainer from the National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI), as an Emergency Medical Technician EMT-1A from the Santa Barbara County Emergency Medical Services Agency, and as an Instructor Trainer from the Divers Alert Network. Lastly, they are certified as a Submersible Pilot by the Deep Submersible Pilots Association (DSPA) and as a Mantis Submersible ADS Pilot by Offshore Systems Engineering Limited (OSEL).
