Al Thomas possesses extensive experience in healthcare and patient representation, serving as a Lay Member on various committees at NICE since November 2018, including roles focused on medical technologies and advisory committees related to respiratory health. Current positions include Lay Member of the National Patient Safety Committee at NHS England & NHS Improvement since June 2021 and Mental Health Act Manager at Gloucestershire Health and Care NHS Foundation Trust. Al has previously held leadership roles, including Lead Governor at Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Chair of the Healthwatch Gloucestershire Steering Group. Educational qualifications include a Master of Arts in Music and a BA (Open) in Music, Languages, and History from The Open University, alongside a PGCE from Crewe College of Education and a BA Hons in Economics from the University of Cambridge.
