Tania Hefer is a Senior Policy Advisor at the Earthquake Commission since April 2020, contributing to the development of the Natural Hazards Insurance Act 2023 and operational policy. Previously, Tania served as a legal advisor at MDS Law, focusing on commercial matters and litigation, and held the position of South African qualified lawyer at Helmore Ayers, working on various legal matters while pursuing qualification in New Zealand. Tania's extensive legal experience includes consulting on international and South African law at CS Consulting and advising the South African government on international law as a State Law Advisor. Tania has also lectured at the University of Pretoria and North West University Potchefstroom Campus, and has held various associate positions in reputable law firms, specializing in international arbitration and commercial litigation. Tania holds multiple qualifications including an LLM in International Law from The University of British Columbia and an LLB from North-West University.

The Natural Hazards Commission Toka Tu Ake is New Zealand’s unique response to its geological environment. NHC Toka Tū Ake provides insurance cover for damage to residential property caused by earthquakes, landslips, volcanic eruptions, hydrothermal activity and tsunamis. All New Zealanders with home and/or contents insurance automatically receive NHCover. Other key functions include: Administering the Natural Disaster Fund, facilitating and supporting research to help build understanding of natural disasters and how to mitigate damage, and implementing education initiatives using school programmes, advertising and collateral.
