Malia McPherson is a Deputy City Attorney at the Oakland City Attorney's Office since September 2018, previously serving as a Stanford Public Interest Fellow at the same office from 2017 to 2018. Prior experience includes a role as a Law Clerk to the Honorable James Donato in the Northern District of California from 2016 to 2017 and as a Clinical Research Associate at Penumbra Inc from 2010 to 2013. Malia McPherson holds a Juris Doctor degree from Stanford Law School earned between 2013 and 2016 and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Molecular and Cell Biology and Public Health from the University of California, Berkeley, completed in 2010.

The Office of the City Attorney defends Oakland’s interests and resources in court and initiates legal action to secure justice and protect the rights of Oakland taxpayers and residents. We draft and review ordinances and resolutions and sponsor legislation along with members of the City Council. We aggressively and strategically negotiate major agreements, approve as to form and legality all contracts and help to shape Oakland’s policies. And we provide expert legal advice to City leaders and officials including the Mayor, City Council, City Auditor, City Administrator and City departments, boards and commissions.
