Michael Thom, CFA, is a finance professional with extensive experience in asset management and corporate governance. Currently serving as the Managing Director of CFA Societies Canada since May 2019, Michael is also a Consumer Interest Director on the board of the Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments since February 2024. Prior roles include Vice President at Lumen Asset Management Inc. from November 2015 to May 2019, as well as positions at Obelysk Funds Ltd. and Genus Capital Management, where skills in trading and investment strategies were developed. Michael's background also includes experience as an Energy Analyst at Powerex, focusing on reconciliations and settlements in the energy sector. Currently pursuing a Master of Laws in Business Law at York University - Osgoode Hall Law School, Michael holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from The University of British Columbia.

OBSI - Ombudsman for Banking Services and Investments
OBSI is Canada’s trusted independent dispute resolution service for consumers and small businesses with a complaint they can't resolve with their banking services or investment firm. As a free alternative to the legal system, we work informally and confidentially to find fair outcomes to disputes about banking and investment products and services. OBSI looks into complaints about most banking and investment matters including: mutual funds; bonds and GICs; stocks, exchange traded funds, income trusts and other securities; investment advice; unauthorized trading; fraud; debit and credit cards; mortgages; loans and credit; fees and rates; transaction errors; misrepresentation; and accounts sent to collections. Where a complaint has merit, OBSI may recommend compensation up to a maximum of $350,000. OBSI’s staff consists of qualified professionals from the financial services, law, accounting, dispute resolution and regulatory compliance fields.
