Sam W.

Sam W. has extensive work experience in the field of software engineering and data engineering. In their current role at onXmaps, Inc. as a Senior Backend Engineer, they are responsible for developing and maintaining backend systems.

Prior to this, Sam worked as a Senior Backend Engineer (Contract) at LocalStack. Here, they designed and deployed a serverless streaming analytics data pipeline, enabling the extraction of business analytics from a tech support chatbot tool. Sam also wrote a client-side framework for emitting usage and performance analytics data, as well as added features and fixed bugs in the core Python program.

Before LocalStack, Sam held the position of Senior Data Engineer at Thorn, where they developed a microservice for automatically classifying data related to criminal investigations using machine learning. This service significantly reduced manual review time. Sam utilized Python, Bottle, MySQL, RabbitMQ, and PyTorch for this project.

As a Data Infrastructure Engineer at Patreon, Sam designed and implemented ETL pipelines for streaming and aggregating large amounts of data daily. Sam also created an efficient ETL service for syncing datasets from MySQL/PostgreSQL to Redshift, which was faster and cost-effective. PySpark, AWS Lambda, and EMR were the technologies utilized.

In their previous role as a Software Engineer at Bowers & Wilkins, Sam built serverless cloud APIs and ETL pipelines for analytics and log data. Sam also developed daemons in Go for collecting analytics, log, and crash data from IoT devices. Additionally, they wrote tooling for conducting intensive load testing using Locust and EC2.

Sam also has experience as a Software Engineer at Innit and a Software Developer at MyApprovals. In their early career, they worked as a Machine Learning Research Assistant at DePaul University, where they used machine learning and statistical methods to diagnose Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).

Throughout their career, Sam has demonstrated a strong background in software engineering and data engineering, with experience in technologies such as Python, Java, AWS, and machine learning frameworks.

From 2011 to 2015, Sam W. attended Carleton College and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree in Computer Science.
