Hyung Won Chung is a Research Scientist at OpenAI, specializing in reasoning and AI agents. He was a foundational contributor to o1-preview, o1, and Deep Research, and currently leads work on coding agents, including the training of the Codex mini model.
Prior to OpenAI, Hyung Won Chung was part of Google Brain, where he worked on scaling challenges in machine learning. His contributions included building the JAX-based large-scale training system T5X, training models like PaLM, and developing instruction fine-tuning methods for the Flan model families.
Hyung Won Chung holds a PhD from MIT and is originally from South Korea.
