Randers Kunstmuseum was founded in 1887 and opened its doors in 1893. It is considered one of the oldest art museums in Denmark. The museum today is housed in the Cultural Center in Randers, Kulturhuset, designed by the architect Flemming Lassen in 1969. 

The museum houses a large collection of paintings, sculptures, prints and drawings from Denmark and abroad, dating from the late 18th Century to the present day. The collection remains alive today: new works of art are added regularly. 
Spanning more than two hundred years of art, the collection tells the story of how Denmark and the Art Scene has changed through the ages. From the Golden Age of Danish art (1800–64) to contemporary art. The walkway extending through the building acts like a kind of timeline. As you move around the inner courtyard you also move chronologically through a sequence of art from present day to the late 18th century.

Particular highlights in the older part of the collection are important works by C. W. Eckersberg, Vilhelm Kyhn, Vilhelm Hammershøi, L. A. Ring, Agnes Slott-Møller, Theodor Philipsen, Emilie Mundt, J.F. Willumsen, Johan Rohde, Anna Ancher etc. Modern art from the 20th century and contemporary art are represented by a wide range of artists, including Vilhelm Lundstrøm, Wilhelm Freddie, Rita Kernn-Larsen, Asger Jorn, Sonja Ferlov Mancoba, Richard Mortensen, Per Kirkeby, Hein Heinsen, Kurt Trampedach, Daniel Spoerri, Yoko Ono, Kirsten Justesen, Christian Lemmerz, Erik A. Frandsen, Julie Nord, Martin Bigum and many others. The museum is also home to a vast collection of the danish artist Sven Dalsgaard. 

The Glass installation Kosmisk Rum by the Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson is a particular highlight and attracts numerous visitors every year.  

The collection is the heart of the museum. It forms the starting point of everything we do: curating exhibitions, hosting events, educational activities, conducting research, publishing books, and much, much more.
