Hugh Runyan is a Senior Geospatial Data Scientist at RMI, where work commenced in April 2023. Prior to this role, Hugh served as a PhD Candidate at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography from June 2016 to December 2022, contributing to the Sandin and Kuester Labs and the Stramski Ocean Optics Lab. A brief tenure as a Visiting PhD Student at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center occurred in 2017. Earlier experience includes serving as a Captain on a sailboat from September 2013 to July 2015 and as an Applications Engineer at Hinds Instruments from February 2012 to September 2013. Hugh holds a Doctor of Philosophy in Applied Ocean Science from UC San Diego, completed in January 2023, along with a Master of Science in Applied Ocean Science from the same institution, earned in June 2018, and a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University, obtained in May 2011.
