O'Connell's background also includes senior level design positions at Gearbox Software, where work involved Aliens: Colonial Marines, and Human Head Studios, contributing to Prey. Early career achievements include level design roles at Vinayak Games and various game projects utilizing idTech 2 and BUILD engine technologies from 1997 to 2000.
