Erik Nelson has a diverse work experience history. Erik started their career in Johnson County Developmental Supports as a Community Employment Coach/Residential Team Leader, where they supervised staff and provided employment supports to individuals with developmental disabilities. Erik then transitioned to Wheat State Pizza as a General Manager before joining The Whole Person as a Director of Employment Services, where they assisted individuals with disabilities in career development and worked in accordance with the Independent Living philosophy. After that, Erik worked at NourishKC as a Director of the Culinary Cornerstones Training Program. Erik then became a self-employed Independent Contractor before joining SETWorks as a Sales Manager.

Erik Nelson obtained a High School Diploma from Lincoln East in 1999. Erik then attended Wayne State College from 1999 to 2000, majoring in Sociology but did not earn a degree. Erik went on to complete a Bachelor of General Studies degree in Sociology from The University of Kansas from 2000 to 2004. In 2012, they obtained a certification as a Certified Employment Support Professional (CESP) from APSE.
