Gabe Mayo

VP, Hardware Engineering at Shield AI

Gabe Mayo is Shield AI’s Vice President of Hardware Engineering. Prior to joining Shield AI, Gabe amassed more than two decades of technology industry expertise, leading companies that developed telecommunications systems, software applications, semiconductors, and test and measurement instrumentation. Gabe built his career working for engineering firms including Cheung Laboratories, TTC (now Viavi), and Acterna. He is also the founder of two companies: Synaptyx Corporation and Mantaro Networks. Synaptyx Corporation designed and developed a multi-service integrated access device that provided low-cost, compact integration of voice and data services; the company was sold to Telco Systems where the product was marketed under the name of Edgelink 300. Through Mantaro Networks, a company that sold ground-based robots, Gabe provided consulting services to market leading clients including Qualcomm. Gabe considers engineering to be specialized problem solving; he advocates for his team to use analytical approaches to seek the right solution, even if it means breaking down a problem in order to rebuild it from scratch. Gabe earned both his Bachelor of Science and Master’s degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Maryland, with specialty in Electromagnetics.

Shield AI builds self-driving technology that enables swarms of unmanned systems to operate on the edge without GPS, communications, or remote pilots. Further, by applying reinforcement learning to scalable simulations, Shield AI trains unmanned systems to learn new tactics and behaviors to autonomously accomplish new missions ranging from clearance operations with SUAS to breaching integrated air defense systems with Group 2-5 UAS.
